According to an evaluation by Stanford University, our PIs Prof. Martin Hartmann and Prof. Matthias Thommes are among the top 2 percent of the most cited scientists worldwide. The list was published by researchers at Stanford University who evaluated the Scopus database, the largest abstract and citation database for peer-reviewed literature published by Elsevier.
This overview, called the “Stanford List,” lists around 200,400 researchers worldwide among the most cited two percent in August 2022. In Germany, a total of 9924 scientists are listed – including 227 from FAU.

About the methodology

The publication data used for the study are based on a data cut from Scopus in August 2022 and refer to the citation year 2021. Citations, h-index, and citations of publications with different author positions, among others, were used to create the database of the most cited 2 percent of scientists in Scopus. The database was first created in 2019 by Prof. Dr. John P. A. Ioannidis of Standford University, along with colleagues, and is updated annually.
